This week, I signed Josh and me up to serve as small group leaders for Kids Camp… and, just for fun, I did it the same week he’s scheduled to preach. Was he thrilled? Let’s just say, he loved me deeply in that moment- even if it didn’t show on his face.
But beneath the jokes and the juggling, this reminded me of something we’ve learned over and over again in marriage:
Serving together draws you closer like nothing else can.
The Shift That Changes Everything
So often in marriage, especially when life gets full or tensions rise, we find ourselves standing face-to-face- trying to be understood, trying to win an argument, or just trying to survive. And sometimes, that face-to-face stance becomes a face-off.
But something miraculous happens when we change positions.
When we move from facing each other in conflict to standing side-by-side in purpose.
When we stop seeing each other as the obstacle and start seeing each other as teammates again.
Serving together resets your perspective.
It pulls you out of your bubble. It reminds you that there are people who need love, hope, and truth- and that you get to be the ones to bring it. Together.
Serving strengthens your connection.
It puts you in motion- shoulder to shoulder, solving problems, laughing at the chaos, praying for someone else’s breakthrough. Suddenly, you remember why you fell in love: you’re better together.
Serving reignites your joy.
There’s something deeply fulfilling about doing what you were made to do-with the person you were made to do life with. It’s not just fulfilling work—it’s fun.
So where do you start?
Maybe it’s saying yes to leading a small group.
Maybe it’s volunteering at your church’s next event.
Maybe it’s bringing a meal to someone in need or going on a mission trip.
Whatever it looks like- step into something together. Not for the sake of being busy, but for the sake of being bonded in something bigger than yourselves.
This week, even when I caught Josh sighing as he looked at our schedule, I could tell- he knows the truth too.
Serving doesn’t just bless others- it transforms us.
So take that step. Stand side-by-side. You just might find your marriage stronger than it’s ever been.
Cheering you on,
Katie (and Josh) Walters
